| Subaru first became involved in rallying in 1980 when entries originated directly from the factory in Japan. The manufacturer earned class wins came on a number of international rallies, including the Safari Rally, in a variety of models such as Leones, Swingbacks and Touring Wagons. However, it became a serious World Championship player in 1989 when it formed a partnership with British motorsport company Prodrive to establish the Subaru World Rally Team. Subaru rocketed to success and became World Champion Manufacturer just five years later. Since then the team has won a further five FIA titles and, thanks to the popularity of its cars and drivers, enjoys cult status among fans the world over. No other car manufacturer is as closely associated with rallying. |
